Utrecht

Utrecht is a university city in the middle of the country, under half an hour by train from Amsterdam. Come for the medieval centre, the canals with cafés down at water level and a calmer pace than the capital.

Start in the square: Domplein

Domplein, 3512 JE Utrecht

Domplein lies between the Dom Tower and the Dom Church, where the nave stood until a storm brought it down in 1674. Lines in the paving trace the lost nave and the Roman fort that started the city. The university's Academy Building closes one side. Walk through the cloister garden behind the church for a quiet break.

Where to stay in Utrecht

City centre

200 m from Domplein

The old town inside the ring of canals, with the Oudegracht, the Dom and most shops and restaurants. You can walk everywhere, but streets near the bars stay loud late on weekend nights.

A district of 19th-century streets just north-east of the old town, with local shops, cafés and the Griftpark nearby. It feels like a residential area, and the centre is ten minutes away on foot.

Oudwijk

1.3 km from Domplein

A short walk east of the old town, with leafy streets and large brick houses. Close to the Railway Museum and quiet at night, so it suits families.

Oost

2.2 km from Domplein

Green residential streets around the Wilhelminapark and the Rietveld Schröder House, a little further from the centre. Good if you want space and calm and do not mind a bike ride or bus.
